An inspiring talk from Josh, one of those behind Bioteket’s software infrastructure, about why software ethics are relevant for Bioteket, what has been implemented, and how it works.
In short, Bioteket is about creating a public good and a part of Copenhagen’s culture. Proprietary platforms like Facebook undermine these goals by putting our culture on their terms, forcing individuals to submit to subtle but comprehensive surveillance and AI-allocated advertising in order to access events and opportunities in our own communities. The cumulative effect of culture being mediated by private, for-profit digital platforms is that the commercial logic of the platforms is ubiquitous. By using readily-available free (as in freedom) software alternatives, Bioteket demonstrates that it is possible to create culture differently.
